My Education, Accolades, and Experience
I hold a degree in music performance with an emphasis in percussion from the University of Northern Colorado. I’ve performed with countless concert bands, drum lines, and percussion groups throughout Colorado, and I’m always looking to perform and teach any chance I get. My playing styles are focused on Rock, Funk, Jazz, Marching, and Classical percussion. I have taught and consulted many high schools and percussion ensembles all over Colorado.
My Approach to Teaching Drum Lessons
My philosophy starts with drumming in a natural and efficient way. If we can develop our approach to the instrument intelligently with a strong basis in fundamentals, we’ll be able to attack any style of music effectively. I like to help my students discover their personal passion in music, and then move forward with that while supplementing exercises and styles to create well rounded percussionists and musicians.
One of My Practice Techniques
I often spend a lot of time rehearsing music at a slow tempo. We should practice slowly at a speed where we can really think about every detail, and then speed up as we master the music. This results in a consistency within our technique and drumming that allows us to play and perform well every single time we sit behind the instrument.
My Favorites in These Five Styles
- Rock: Journey
- Funk: Snarky Puppy
- Jazz: Pat Metheny
- Pop: Bruno Mars
- Classical: John Powell
My Favorite Quote
“Do or do not, there is no try.” -Yoda
How I Started Playing Music
I started playing drums in 5th Grade. They originally slated me to play clarinet because there were already too many people playing drums. My parents fought for me and convinced them to let me have a chance at playing percussion, and look at me now!
