My Education, Accolades, and Experience

Currently, I am a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Colorado Boulder where I teach piano lessons and accompany while I pursue my doctorate in piano performance. I am a graduate of Harvard University (BA) and University of Nevada Reno (MM).  At Harvard, I performed with the Bach Society Orchestra, Harvard Pops Orchestra, Lowell House Opera, Hasty Pudding Theatricals, and various chamber groups, and received the Wister Prize in Music, awarded to the undergraduate with the highest record in the music department. At UNR, I was the rehearsal pianist for the Nevada Chamber Opera, Reno Philharmonic Chorus, and various musical studios, and I also performed with the Reno Chamber Orchestra and UNR symphony orchestra as a competition winner. While pursuing my musical studies, I have maintained private music studios and encouraged my students to participate in recitals, festivals, and competitions. I have also spent time teaching middle school science, building a harpsichord, and playing the organ for church services.

One of My Practice Techniques

Piano is a demanding instrument, and simply executing notes and rhythms can often be a physical struggle. If you experience discomfort while practicing, focus more on removing the tension rather playing the passage correctly. Often this change in mindset leads to more consistent accuracy and execution.

My Favorites in These Five Styles

  • Jazz - Brad Mehldau
  • Musical Theater – West Side Story
  • lassical – J.S. Bach
  • Rock – Aerosmith
  • World Music – Balinese Gamelan

How I Started Playing Music

My father had a desire to study classical music from a young age but did not have the resources to do so, but he was able to purchase a nice grand piano just before my sister and I were born. From the time I was a toddler, I would listen to classical music records as I went to sleep and watch my sister, mom, and aunts practice during the day, so I probably learned some piano skills via absorption.

I had a fantastic piano teacher my whole childhood who taught me discipline and would always spend a good portion of lesson time analyzing scores, listening to records, and reading essays. Because I had strong sight-reading abilities, people would always ask me to accompany them, so that gave me exposure to working with other musicians and playing in different musical styles
