Teaching is about understanding the individual and facilitating their growth. This is achieved through empathizing with the perspective of the student. My job is to give a student tools and train them how to self-access as musicians. Teaching is a collaboration where I learn alongside the student. I am a steward of the knowledge and kindness my mentors have shown me. I hope to form this same bond with students of mine.
I like to compare and contrast many different performances of the works that I study. I start with the music and I find my favorite interpretations. I listen constantly to the same piece by different musicians as I bike, or drive, or hike, or walk. Then, I sit with my scores while I sip my evening tea and watch the music move crossed the page. Finally, when I need a break from the score I will watch the performances of the same piece and take in what the performers are trying to convey. I enjoy the costumes, and the make-up, and the set. Then all gets put together when I go to sing. Your brain can learn without making a single sound.

I was in a family band with my brother and my dad. We all took turns playing different instruments and singing. I started at the age of nine and just kept going. When I was in my early teens, one of my favorite activities was to go play for tips on the streets in my small town in Ohio.
