David holds a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy from The University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado which was completed in Spring of 2021. His Undergraduate degree was earned in 2016 from the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado as well as he completed a Performance Certificate program there in 2017. David began teaching private saxophone lessons in his hometown of Gilbert, Arizona as early as 2012 and has developed his teaching philosophies and techniques on Saxophone, Flute and Clarinet since then. David has received accolades as both a performer and composer by the prominent jazz and jazz education magazine Downbeat for being a member of the “Best Collegiate Jazz Combo” (2016) and by the Herb Alpert Foundation at music publishing company ASCAP as a “Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer” (2015 and 2020). In addition to his education and teaching experience, David is a regular performer in the Colorado music scene, playing weddings and events along the Rocky Mountains, and performing a number of styles of music at venues in Colorado such as Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge, Nocturne Jazz Club, Cervantes, and others.
My teaching approach is one that I have developed for many years, and I have found works well with a variety of different types of students with their own goals. While emphasizing great practice skills and attention to details, I tailor my lessons to my students so that they will find success, as well as the motivation and inspiration to try new things.
As an improviser, I use improvisation frequently to discover aspects of my playing to work on while practicing. Doing something you enjoy like improvising can sometimes be the best way to get started on a practice session, as it makes picking up your instrument more fun, and can reveal a path for getting better at a particular phrase, or idea.
Rock - Queen
Pop - Britney Spears (Yes, really)
Funk - Tower of Power
Jazz - Constantly changing. My original inspiration was the saxophonist Michael Brecker
Classical - Hindemith
Charlie Parker - “You’ve got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail.”
I began playing saxophone in band class in 5th grade, where many people learn their first instruments. My determination to get as good as possible, and learn more about the incredible lineage of saxophonists began in Middle School after listening to Michael Brecker. Since then it’s been at least 15 years and I’m not slowing down anytime soon!
