About Colin

There was a piano in Colin’s parents’ home when he was very young, and he remembers sitting at it and making noise. He had to join the band in grade school and had an unsuccessful attempt at learning the clarinet. Around the age of 10, Colin started developing an interest in rock and roll and grunge music. When he was 12, he got his first guitar and started taking lessons.
Colin earned his Bachelor’s in Music from the University of Nebraska Omaha and his Master’s in Music from the Manhattan School of Music. He started teaching while completing his undergraduate degree and has continued teaching ever since.

In the past, Colin has gained extensive experience performing and recording various styles of music. He has performed as a solo and ensemble classical guitarist, a rock guitarist, a rock bassist, a solo singer/songwriter, and a bluegrass guitarist and singer. Additionally, he has taken part in music competitions such as The National Flatpicking Championships, the Koblenz Guitar Festival Competition, the UNO Concerto Competition, and the Rockygrass Band Competition.

Colin’s Instructional Approach

As a teacher, my objective is to assist students in exploring their interest in music and devising a lesson plan that will captivate and excite them about learning songs. My aim is for students to develop the necessary tools and techniques to become proficient musicians. I strongly believe that a solid grasp of music theory is indispensable and applicable to any musical style. Additionally, I emphasize the importance of building technical skills through scales, arpeggios, and chord progressions, as these are essential for advancing beyond the initial stages of learning an instrument.

Practice Tips

I do not have just one technique that I prefer, but rather, I have a warm-up routine that is a combination of the most effective exercises I have learned throughout my life. This routine includes a set of major and minor scales that cover the entire fretboard and a set of arpeggios. I set the metronome to different speeds and accents, which forced me to play the passages in a variety of ways.
