Boulder’s Best Hand drum Lessons

Where does your hand drum journey start?

Lessons for Kids

Learning to play hand drums as a kid is a great after school activity that will teach them to speak a new language, develop cognitive skills, build confidence, make new friends, and play some great music. Taking hand drum lessons is not as easy as it looks, but young hand drummers learn more than just scales and music at our studio. We teach them how to practice through time management skills for kids and provide helpful tips to our parents for success during at home hand drum practice.

Lessons for Adults

Our hand drum teachers understand the adult student and how to craft your hand drum lessons to accommodate the way you want to learn to play hand drums. Online hand drum lessons are a great option for those who travel for work. Get started on the hand drum lesson you have been putting off!

My Education, Accolades, And Experience

I am currently enrolled at the University of Colorado Boulder, pursuing my master’s in music education. Before coming to Colorado, I graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2021 with a degree in percussion performance. After CU, I plan to become a music educator in K-12 public schools. I have 5 years of total teaching experience. I was involved with various high school programs around Lincoln where I taught marching band percussion, percussion ensemble, and private percussion lessons.

My Approach To Teaching

I believe first and foremost in a well-rounded musical education. I teach musicians and not just drummers. Becoming a great player is dependent on technical prowess, theoretical understanding, and knowledge of many different types of music.

One Of My Practice Techniques

There need to be clear goals! Without a plan, practice will not be effective. I structure my practice sessions with the short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals in mind.

My Education, Accolades, And Experience

I am a passionate jazz-trained musician with experience playing and studying music around the world. I began playing drums as a teenager and was named a 2017 New York State All-State Snare Drummer in high school. I then went on to study music and physics at Williams College in 2021, where I was the lead percussion teaching assistant for two years and played with a big band, jazz combo, percussion ensemble, and two neo soul/hip hop groups. I am now pursuing my PhD at CU Boulder where I combine my passion for music and physics by researching advanced methods for controlling sound, while also playing with local funk/indie rock group, JFC. Over the past nine years, I have performed and toured in several cities including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Brussels, Manchester, and the Vatican City. These performances include work with Grammy-award-winning artists such as Bryce Dessner of The National and Room Full of Teeth. I have a passion for world music and percussion, which I have devoted much of my career to studying. Over the past six years, I have focused on Brazilian, Cuban, Western African, and Central American music which have expanded my rhythmic independence and imagination as a performer and teacher.

My Approach To Teaching

My teaching method emphasizes learning the fundamentals. The key to good drumming, whether beginner or advanced, is a good foundation. Specifically, I focus on developing proper technique and knowledge of rudimentary rhythms in order to set students up with the basics they need to succeed as a drummer both in lessons and beyond. With proper groundwork established, I help students of all ages achieve their musical goals through a personalized program in a great environment to learn and grow.

One Of My Practice Techniques

Isolation of patterns. Drum rhythms involve the playing of two or more patterns at the same time. In order to grasp a new rhythm, I begin by focusing on one element and then slowly incorporate the rest, understanding how each pattern fits with the rest like pieces to a puzzle.
