“The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message, and we, the musicians, are the messengers”

– Roy Ayers

About Madison

Madison is a Soprano based in Boulder, currently obtaining her Master’s degree at the University of Colorado in Voice Performance and Pedagogy. She began singing at the age of 13 when she played the role of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray (yes, the John Travolta role). She was hooked from that point on, and has since gone to study a variety of vocal styles, including Musical Theatre, Jazz, and Opera. She obtained her Bachelor of Music from Metropolitan State University, and she began teaching theater, voice lessons, and dance with the Academy of Children’s Theatre in Colorado Springs at the age of 18. She ran a successful voice studio in Colorado Springs before moving to Boulder, and has since seen her students flourish and land leading roles in well known theaters across Colorado.

In addition to her successes in theater and music education, Madison frequently performs across the Front Range. She has sung the soprano solos in the following masterworks: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, G.F. Handel’s Gloria, Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit, and John Rutter’s Gloria. She has appeared with the Montview Westminster Choir, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and Parish House Baroque Chamber Orchestra. Her opera roles include: Duchess Carolina in Moreno’s Luisa Fernanda, Ma in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up, and the Dew Fairy in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. Additionally, Madison premiered True Women of the West with Art Song Colorado, of which she was the curator and performer.

Madison’s Instructional Approach

My goal with each of my students is to help them find and cultivate their own “Naked Voice”. Each student has their own unique voice which can never be replicated. By finding this together, we will develop your own personal style. I never want to make my students sound a certain way that isn’t authentic to themselves, but rather create a voice that is uniquely yours and one that you love! I always strive to develop good techniques that can be translated across all styles. This way, we are striving for longevity in the voice, no matter what repertoire we are learning, whether it be an opera aria or a Taylor Swift song.

Practice Tips

  • Developing a routine is the key to success. Set aside time each day, even if it’s only 10 minutes to start, and you’ll find yourself making lots of progress!
  • Stay hydrated!
  • Always be sure to warm up before practicing. It can be tempting to jump right into singing your music, but warming up will give you the tools for longevity throughout your practice.
  • If you feel your practice is becoming mundane, take a break and sing something just for fun! I personally like to practice the music I’ve been assigned for 20 minutes, and take a 5-minute break to sing something just for fun!
  • Don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things!
