Stephanie Chan

“Music has the ability to transport us to different times and places. It is a passport to the infinite.”

– Richard Strauss

About Stephanie

Stephanie is a graduate of SUNY Purchase. She finished her college education with a master’s degree in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music with an Outside Field from Ithaca College. The outside field consisted of business, psychology, piano pedagogy, and education classes. Although piano became her main focus in college, she was also an active violinist from the ages of 9 through 18. Music has always been a big part of her life, through private lessons, ensembles, music classes, festivals, and recitals. Since 2012, Stephanie has helped many young students with performances in school ensembles. It was through these experiences that she decided to become a teacher. Stephanie has had experience teaching students of all ages the music they feel passionate about.

After pursuing teaching as a full-time job, Stephanie has had the pleasure of meeting a wide variety of students who come from different backgrounds. Every student has their own goal when stepping into the music world, and she believes it is important to help each student discover and reach that goal. She has prepared students for music festivals, judging, competitions, and recitals. She believes that ensuring the students’ joy and love for music is the most important aspect of teaching. If the student is happy then their musicality and dedication to their instruments will fall into place by themselves

Stephanie’s Instructional Approach

The most important aspect of teaching is knowing that every student needs a different approach.

I use a variety of method books, but the most helpful tool has been learning from experience. I have taught many students of all ages and different levels. Finding the right combination of exercises, theory, music history, and playing is key.

I love exploring different genres and playing styles with my students to see what they enjoy the most. At the end of the day, I want to show how fun and inspiring music can be!

Practice Tips

Starting a brand-new piece of music can be exciting and daunting. I always find myself a bit overwhelmed when flipping through all the pages and looking for the section that looks the hardest. One tip I have used over the years is to actively listen to recordings of the music they are learning with the music score in front of them and to always have a pencil in hand to circle or write notes on any sections you find interesting. Familiarizing myself with the sound will help speed up the learning process at the beginning.

Another tip I use is to record myself when playing. When we spend so much time practicing a piece, we start to get used to certain sections being sloppy, or having a wrong note, or it just isn’t as expressive as we thought. Playing it back will give you a lot of feedback on which sections need extra work. Almost like a fresh pair of ears!
