My Education, Accolades, and Experience
As a young student I won recognition for outstanding performances and my own compositions. While studying at the University of Denver, I also worked as an instructor of piano at Colorado Music Quest and as an accompanist with the Denver Chorale. I participated in Pramberger Adult Festival in Colorado and International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York, and was a laureate of the American Protege competition in New York. While studying for my Masters in piano performance, I worked as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and also developed a deep affection for symphonic and chamber music. I have accompanied the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, Fairbanks Youth Symphony, UAF Woodwind ensemble, and various chamber groups, and I have been a guest artist with the Denver School of the Arts in 2014-2015. Currently, I continue to perform and accompany in chamber settings, and I am the principal pianist with the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra in Colorado.
My Approach to Teaching
I like my students to enjoy the process of learning. I chose music that challenges and doesn’t just conform to one method book series so they get a well-rounded perspective. I like to choose music that the students feel motivated by as well as listen to and want to play.
One of My Practice Techniques
Taking small portions of a piece and practicing them as small chunks, then putting them together and seeing how they fit for the big picture. It’s also important to practice difficult passages separately in order to master them. Playing a piece from beginning to end all the time is not very efficient.
